BBC Sport app reaches 1million UK downloads

The recently launched BBC Sport smartphone app for iPhone and Android devices has reached 1million UK downloads.

The milestone was reached in just over seven weeks, with the iPhone app launching on 7 January followed by Android on 20 February this year.

BBC Sport also announced that January was a record month for total traffic outside of the Olympics, with 42 million unique browsers and over one billion page views. The data highlights the trend for growing mobile access among BBC Sport audiences, with mobile and tablet devices accounting for 43.4 percent of January’s total traffic, up from 31 percent in January 2012.

Phil Fearnley, General Manager, BBC News and Knowledge said, “It’s a huge achievement to reach this milestone so quickly, and is the icing on the cake for a large project to improve BBC Sport content on mobile devices.

“Since delivering record breaking coverage of the London 2012 Olympics across multiple platforms, we’ve launched a new, responsive, BBC Sport mobile website and apps for iPhone and Android.

“We’ve also migrated key features over to mobile, including live scores, stats and video, and will continue to improve how audiences use BBC Sport on the go.” he said.
