ABC iview mobile app most popular entertainment app in Australia & New Zealand

Apple’s Top 25 All-Time Free Apps named the ABC iview mobile app is one of the top ten most downloaded apps in Australia and New Zealand.

ABC iview is number one in the entertainment category, beating Kindle, YouTube, Foxtel Go and The Sydney Morning Herald for iPad.

The iview app, which was also recently awarded Best Application for a Mobile by the country’s industry body for interactive content and digital media, includes streaming over iPhone and iPad, and can now be viewed via 3G as well as Wi-Fi.

The ABC iview app has overtaken PCs as the most popular platform for viewing ABC TV programmes online, representing 53% of all iview plays in April 2013. Since its launch in December 2010, the app has gained nearly 2.5 million downloads and has more than 550,000 unique users per month.

ABC’s controller of TV multi-platform, Arul Baskaran, said the ABC had delivered eight million programme plays via the app in April.

“The real story here is a dramatic shift in how Australians are consuming content on tablets and mobile,” he said. “As a public broadcaster our focus is on making ABC content as easily accessible as possible. Our team is working on some exciting new features for the app which we look forward to launching later this year,” he added.

The Top 25 All-Time Free Apps for iPad chart included apps made available in Australia and New Zealand.
