ABU gets leaders’ backing for increased activities

The 95th ABU Administrative Council meeting in Turkey has backed the expansion of services to the Union’s 255 broadcasting industry members throughout the Asia-Pacific.

The council approved the ABU Secretariat’s work for the last six months and the direction in which the Union is heading of becoming an increasingly member-oriented, service-oriented and forward looking professional body.

Councillors backed new initiatives to be launched in 2014 including the ABU TV Market and Expo, the Global Media Forum on Climate Change next April in Jakarta and the World Summit on Media for Children in September 2014.

The Council also supported newly-initiated projects such as the ABU TV Song Festival to be held at the next General Assembly in Hanoi in October 2013 and the ABU Radio Song Festival to be held in Colombo in 2014.

The meeting in Istanbul was hosted by the TRT-Turkey, whose Director General Mr Ibrahim Sahin offered to host the 2015 ABU General Assembly, an offer that was welcomed by the Council.

During the meeting, ABU Acting President Mr Murtaza Solangi stepped down because his term as Director General of PBC, Pakistan, had ended. The new Acting President is Mr Naoji Ono, Vice-President of NHK-Japan. The Hanoi General Assembly will elect a President and Vice-President.

In welcoming Councillors, the Deputy Director of TRT, Mr Zeynel Koç, said his organisation strongly supports the work of ABU and believes the Union should play a leading role in helping members to navigate the stormy waters of the digital world.
