Thai universities united for digital TV channel

A network of 33 public and private universities in Thailand gathered yesterday to enter the bidding contest to operate an educational digital TV channel.

The channel would be overseen by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

“The application for this public TV licence might be made by the University Network for Public Service or the Council of University Presidents of Thailand,” said Sitthichai Tudsri, Vice President of Chulalongkorn University, which is the centre of the network.

Tudsri added a committee from the network would work on production, financial support and overseeing general management, futuregov.asia reports.

The channel will run on a 24 hour basis with eight hours of live programmes daily, followed by re-runs and pre-recorded programmes.

The broadcasting committee under the NBTC is expected to grant the first public digital terrestrial TV licence within the next few months.
