Three 3D sequels confirmed for Avatar

Fox Studios has confirmed that three sequels to James Cameron’s 2009 3D blockbuster Avatar will be filmed simultaneously next year.

The Drum reports that although they will be filmed back to back, the films will be released in December 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Cameron has previously said that he would make two sequels. The director now says the two films he proposed in 2010 “would not be enough”.

“In writing the new films, I’ve come to realise that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated. It became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen,” he said.

Four screenwriters have been hired to assist Cameron in writing the follow-ups to the highest grossing film of all time.
