ABU GA – Strategic policies needed to cope with technical changes, TV experts told

Asia-Pacific broadcasters need strategic directions and policies for the future if they are to cope with rapid technological change, a meeting of the region’s broadcast engineering experts has been told.

In his welcoming address, Mr Tran Dung Trinh, Vice President of Vietnam Television, told delegates at the ABU Technical Committee meeting in Hanoi the television industry was moving fast in dramatic changes in technology, content and delivery to audiences.

He said the TV set was no longer the only way audiences could get access to programs, with the Internet, social networks, smart phones and tablets playing an increasingly significant role in providing audiences with information and content.

“It’s tough competition for traditional television,” he said. “Television technology has been on the fast track of a revolution.”

He said VTV had recently upgraded to high-definition television, though he was fully confident that, in just a couple of years, much higher definition would be dominant.

“Then we will surely be on the verge of a new wave of technological change,” he added. “Therefore, it is essential we should have strategic directions and policies for the future.”
