ABU GA – ABU to set up new activities fund for technical assistance

The ABU will set up a new technical activities fund to help broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific.

The decision was taken at the final day of the ABU Technical Committee meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, one of several events leading up to the Union’s 50th General Assembly from 28-29 October 2013.

More than 150 delegates representing broadcasters, regulators, manufacturers, international organisations and others in the region and around the world attended the meeting at the Melia Hanoi Hotel.

Members welcomed the decision to set up the new fund within the Technical Committee as a means to increase training activities from the ABU Secretariat.

The committee also adopted a recommendation on the advanced sound delivery standard for use with UHDTV and agreed to amend the guideline for the Green Broadcast Engineering award.

Host broadcaster Vietnam TV presented this years’ Special Topic Session, themed “Moving to a Digital World”, highlighting some of the major activities being carried out and planned for the future within its development master plan. It showcased some of the key areas that VTV is working on with the limited resources as a developing broadcaster.

ABU’s Director of Technology Dr Amal Punchihewa said he was also very pleased with another highlight of the day, a CTO Forum that looked at “Broadcasting Technologies for 2020”. He said many of the issues revolved around the drive towards embracing new developments in technology, and the session heard a variety of varying views from the members, though the collective notion was that developments in technology cannot be ignored or disregarded as they provide improvements in ease of use and efficiency.
