Registration opens for ABU media and disaster risk reduction summit

Registration is now open for the ABU’s international Media Summit on Climate Change, ICTs and Disaster Risk Reduction in Indonesia next year.

The ABU summit in Jakarta from 4-6 June 2014 is being organised in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union, UNESCO and the Indonesian Ministry of Information and Communication, and is aimed at generating support for joint world action by broadcasting unions and UN agencies to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Mr Freddy H Tulung, the Ministry’s Director General of Information and Public Communication says the summit will address the role of media and ICTs in creating awareness on climate change, disaster risk reduction and other environmental issues, and helping the public contribute to reducing the factors driving climate change.

The summit is an offspring of the 2009 UNESCO International Conference on Broadcast Media and Climate Change in Paris and offers a platform for the exchange of ideas and practices on: the social dimensions of climate change, ICTs and the environment, broadcasting before and after disasters, cases in green technology implementation and increasing the effectiveness of emergency broadcasting.

ABU Secretary-General Dr Javad Mottaghi says several countries in the region have been severely affected by tsunami, earthquakes and floods over the past years.

“We need to put our efforts together to increase public awareness and save lives,” he added.
