Rapid growth in broadcasting and telecoms in India – more than 800 TV channels

The last two decades have seen the start up of more than 800 TV channels in India, according to the country’s I&B Minister Manish Tewari.

The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Manish Tewari opened the 20th International Conference & Exhibition on Terrestrial and Satellite Broadcasting – BES Expo 2014 taking place this week in New Delhi.

Commenting on the problems and challenges faced by the broadcasting sector due to competition for market share, he said the Union Cabinet has recently approved the proposal of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for a comprehensive regulatory framework in the form of guidelines for Television Rating Agencies in India.

Also speaking at the function, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Mr. Bimal Julka, said the Ministry is planning to strengthen Community Radio movement in the country, which would help in giving voice to the voiceless.
