Indonesia tops Asean Para Games medal tally

The 7th Asean Para Games has ended in Myanmar with Indonesia breaking Thailand’s domination to win most medals for the first time.

Indonesian athletes won 99 gold medals, 69 silvers and 49 bronze, with the bulk coming from athletics and swimming. 

Thailand, seeking their sixth overall title here, took home 96 gold, 82 silver and 70 bronze medals.

Malaysia finished third after amassing 50 golds, while Vietnam retained their fourth position in the Games.

Host Myanmar improved on their previous overall position, taking the fifth overall spot with 34 gold medals, 26 silvers and 36 bronzes.

More than 1,600 athletes took part in the week-long Games that saw 12 sports contested: archery, athletic, boccia, and chess, football 5-a-side, football 7-a-side, goalball, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, volleyball-sitting and wheelchair basketball

The official closing of the Games took place at Wunna Theidi Main Stadium, with fireworks and cultural and contemporary performances.

Singapore will host the 8th Asean Para Games in December 2015.

ABU and the Asian Paralympic Committee have partnered to enhance the broadcasting of Paralympic events in the Asia-Pacific and to help increase awareness of Paralympic sports and events amongst television audiences in the region.
