ABU and UNESCO discuss media diversity during visit

The President of the ABU and the Director General of UNESCO discussed ways of increasing media diversity in Asia-Pacific countries when they met in Korea.

DG Irina Bokova was the guest of ABU President Gil Hwan-young when she visited KBS, where Mr Gil is President and CEO. Mr Gil thanked Dr Bokova for her interest in Korea and its culture when she visited KBS is in the middle of a documentary production on the Korean National Commission for UNESCO as it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Dr Bokova spoke strongly about the role of the media as part of UNESCO activities and she encouraged the ABU’s interest in a UNESCO-auspiced Myanmar Journalism School Project, which is aimed at strengthening freedom of expression and improving media diversity and pluralism in that country.

Dr Bokova also made a point on importance of gender equality in and through the media and Mr Gil agreed to collaborate further for mutual interest in the future.
