Entries open for 2014 ABU radio and TV prizes

Entries have now opened for the annual ABU Prizes for excellence in radio and television. Program makers have until 20 June 2014 to submit entries for the six radio and seven television categories.

Two Special Jury Prizes – one for radio and one for television – will be awarded from all the entries received, to recognise the work of producers whose entries are creative and innovative despite limited resources. Organisers say because the award is intended to encourage broadcasters with limited resources, the same organisation cannot be selected as the winner of this category for two consecutive years.

Entries for most categories must have been first broadcast between 1 February 2013 and 31 May this year, except for TV Sports entries, which can go back to a first broadcast date of 1 February 2012.

The six radio categories are for drama, documentary, news reporting, station promotions and service announcements, interactive programs and on-air personality. The television categories are for drama, documentary, entertainment, children, news reporting and sport. The seventh TV category is the ABU Perspective Award for “a program that best delivers the message of the ABU’s perspective on the theme of global issue chosen by ABU members and illustrated through their local issue in any form”. The theme for the ABU’s 50th Anniversary year is “Celebration”.

The 2013 ABU Prizes attracted a record 260-plus entries from broadcasters around the region. ABU was particularly pleased to have received a number of submissions from first-time entrants among the 160 TV entries from 24 countries and 100-plus radio entries from 22 countries.
