Hong Kong’s DBC hands out free digital radios

In an effort to expand its reach, Hong Kong’s Digital Broadcasting Corp (DBC) is handing out free digital radio sets, Asia Radio Today reports.

DBC Executive Head Loh Chan said that digital sets have been installed in more than 10,000 taxis and 5,000 public buses and the next target will be light delivery vans.

The station is also exploring the possibility of fitting all new taxis with digital radio sets, which also offer AM broadcast, in a tie-up with the Transport Department.

To promote digital radio broadcasting, Loh said DBC has requested that the provision of digital services be made a condition of license renewal.

Letters detailing the proposal have been sent to the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau as well as the Communications Authority.

DBC is Hong Kong’s largest digital radio broadcaster, running seven DAB+ only stations.
