Sri Lanka launches international satellite TV channel

Thinetha, the first satellite TV channel targeting Sri Lankan expatriates around the world, is soon to be launched by Colombo-based Future Sat Com Holdings.

Broadcasting programs in English, Tamil and Sinhala via the Thaicom 5 satellite, Thinetha is set to reach 116 countries across the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and Africa, Rapid TV News reports.

“All programs are on or about the New Sri Lanka, on the vast strides made socially, economically, or politically, reflecting a positive outlook,” said a statement on the new channel’s Facebook page.

“Whether created in Sri Lanka or on foreign soil, these New Sri Lanka-oriented programmes – documentaries, news features, musicals, tele-dramas, religious/spiritual and evolving cultural events, women’s and children’s programmes be them live or pre-packaged – Thinetha will disseminate to create a positive image of the New Sri Lanka,” it continued.

Future Sat Com Holdings was awarded a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite uplink licence by Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka in December 2013.
