DTH service to be launched in Bangladesh by year end

Bangladesh-based industrial conglomerate Beximco Group and Russian investment and industry holding company GS Group have announced they will launch a DTH platform in Bangladesh by the end of this year.

GS Group will install head-end and up-link in 2014. Beximo Communications will provide local and international channels and aims to get more than 300,000 subscribers during 2015 and add around 400,000 subscribers annually after that, NexTV Asia reports.

“Presently, Bangladesh does not have any legal DTH operator. The viewer’s only choice is between a few cable operators and a terrestrial television channel,” said Salman F Rahman, Vice Chairman of Beximco Group.

“Signals of Indian DTH operators are broadcast illegally without providing Bangladeshi audiences any local TV programmes. Nevertheless, the demand for a local DTH service is high and Beximco Communications hopes to attract a significant number of subscribers in the country having a population of over 160 million.”
