SBS Korea develops 4K transmitter network

Korea’s Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) is working to expand its 4K transmitter network with a European supplier.

The Munich-based international electronics company Rohde & Schwarz was contracted to deliver all the equipment for the transmission path of SBS’s high-resolution video format.

The deal included the Clipster mastering station for editing, handling and playing out 4K data in real time, with a R&S AVHE100 head end then processing the 4K content, also in real time. The system also provides real time encoding of 4K/UHD at 60 frames per second using HEVC and a DVB-T2 gateway.

The first R&S THU9 liquid-cooled high-power transmitter with 5kW was put into operation in May on Kwanak Mountain. SBS uses the R&S ETL TV analyser as the T&M reference for DVT-T2 analysis and demodulation.

SBS operates one free TV and two radio stations as well as six cable TV stations in South Korea.
