ABC Radio Melbourne turns 90

Australian public broadcaster ABC is celebrating a special birthday. Local radio 774 ABC Melbourne has this week turned 90.

In the 1920s, the station was known as 3LO before undergoing a name change. It turned 90 years old on 13 October.

774 3LO first went to air on 13 October 1924, with an outside broadcast of a performance of ‘La Boheme’ featuring Dame Nellie Melba, from His Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne.

In 1928, the Sydney-based Australian Broadcasting Company took over the station, and in 1932, the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was established and took control of the two Melbourne stations.
