Co-production celebrates best of bonds

Two ABU members are joining to produce and air a radio drama to mark the 60th anniversary of their countries establishing diplomatic ties.

NHK World Radio Japan will produce a radio drama to be aired in Japanese and Burmese to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Myanmar.

The story is based on a 1973 bestselling novel “Thway” written by one of Myanmar’s greatest female writers, Journal Kyaw Ma Ma Lay.

Set in the latter half of the1960s, the story tells of a Japanese woman trying to get to know a half-brother born to her father, who served in Burma during World War Two. Although the brother has harboured resentment towards Japan since childhood, his sister learns Burma’s culture and custom and gradually they break down the barriers.

A top idol in Myanmar, Sai Sai Kham Leng, plays the brother. Kayo Ushio, a Japanese woman living in Myanmar, won the role of sister Yumi at a public audition. The cast differs in the Japanese version.

“The Bond of Blood” was recorded in Myanmar in cooperation with the state-run MRTV and will be aired on MRTV from 22-25 December 2014.
