ABU stages second edition of its Global News Forum

The ABU has invited leaders of broadcast news and current affairs across the region and around the world to the Union’s second Global News Forum, due to be hosted by NHK Japan in March.

ABU Secretary-General Dr Javad Mottaghi said he was pleased to invite senior news directors, reporters and professionals to the 2nd ABU Global News Forum (GNF) in Sendai on 15-16 March 2015.

Hosted by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, the 2015 Global News Forum will coincide with an ABU News Group meeting.

“The GNF was launched in 2013 with the purpose of establishing an open and high-profile dialogue among broadcast journalists across the globe and in the Asia-Pacific region in particular,” Dr Mottaghi said.

The second GNF is held in parallel with the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction so the theme of discussions will be the role of media in disaster situations.

“It will draw from the enormous experience of the host organization, NHK, which has been at the front line of disaster warnings and communications for disaster preparedness,” he went on.

“The 2015 GNF and its associated events will offer unique exchange of experiences and will provide a platform for uniting media from the region and all over the world in becoming key players in tackling the world challenges brought on by the climate changes that will dominate the world agenda in the next 50 years.”

The host city, Sendai, was one of the worst stricken areas of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 15,000 people.

Online registration is now open and further information, including the program, is at the GNF website.
