World Radio Day 2015

Many ABU members have observed World Radio Day this Friday, 13 February. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in November 2011 at its 36th General Conference and the theme this year is: “ Youth and Innovation in Radio.”

The objective of this special day is to raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio and enhance networking among broadcasters. Many radio stations  in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world have celebrated this event by organising and broadcasting  live shows, talk shows, debates, quiz competitions and special musical programmes.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has been actively involved in this celebration, together with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and UNESCO.  Commenting on the World Radio Day, the EBU Media Director, Annika Nyberg-Frankenhaeuser said that there are lots of situations where we cannot watch what is happening but we can listen , and this is where radio comes into its own as a great medium.
