TVNZ and other New Zealand broadcasters bring legal action against ISPs

TVNZ  and other local broadcasters such as SKY TV, Lightbox and MediaWorks have entered legal action against some internet service providers claiming that  the ISPs are enabling customers access unlicensed content through Global Mode.

According to Sky TV, the companies sent requests to some ISPs to stop access to content via Global Mode. Few ISPs have responded to the request, saying that they will cease the services whereas others have maintained that they will continue offering content via Global Mode. Customers using Global Mode can access offshore programming, which would otherwise be geo-blocked in New Zealand.

According to Sky TV and other broadcasters, the Global Mode breaches the Fair Trading Act, as customers can access popular content such as Game of Thrones via ISPs, reports the New Zealand Herald.
