ABU celebrates the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

Since 1990, the 13 of October has been designated by the United Nations as the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The objective of the observance is to raise awareness of how stakeholders are taking action to reduce the risk of disasters.

This year the theme is Knowledge for Life and the focus is on the traditional, indigenous and local knowledge, which complements modern science and reinforces the resilience of individuals within their communities.

In a video message, the ABU Secretary-General Dr Javad Mottaghi recalls that the Union is one of the world’s leading advocates in the use of media to improve the lives of tens of millions of people. “For over a decade we have been actively involved in helping members to educate and prepare their audiences for the expected increase of disasters to hit our region due to climate change.” He added.

The video is posted on ABU’s channel.
