GA 2015: Sports Conference ends on high note

The ABU Sports Conference and related meetings ended yesterday with renewed call for re-unification among members in a rapidly changing sports industry. The three-day conference emphasised the need to re-define and re-position the ABU sports for the long term benefit of the members.

The Chairperson of the ABU Sports Group, Mr Jiang Heping called on all the members to be more supportive in terms of sharing information and conveying their needs. He said, a unified and strong ABU Sports is possible only with the commitment of the members.

At the same time, the ABU Sports must be service as well as member-oriented in order to be relevant. Mr Heping said, we need each other to work towards a common goal in the Asian and Pacific, that of Sports Development.

The Secretary-General of the ABU, Dr Javad Mottaghi in his concluding remarks pointed out the challenges faced in acquiring rights especially to the major events like the Olympics, FIFA and Asian Games. He added, the other unions like the EBU, ASBU and EBU are also faced with same.

Dr Mottaghi said the ABU Sports is expanding its activities and called on the support of the members besides distribution of sporting events.

Over the past three days, the Sports Group conference reviewed the past activities and discussed further activities.

The next Sports Group conference and related meetings will take in May 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
