The ABU Copyright Committee to be renamed as Intellectual Property and Legal Committee

The 22nd ABU Copyright Committee Meeting and Forum took place in Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur from 14-15 March 2016.  This year’s event was hosted by RTM. Fifty participants from 18 countries and organisations joined the two-day intense discussions where various issues related to copyright and intellectual property were raised.

This year’s topics for the forum were on Sports Rights, News Protection, Arbitration and Technologies to prevent signal theft. Speakers from around the world were invited and the event was greatly appreciated, and successful.

Ms Aminath Shayaan Shahid from PSM-Maldives was elected Vice Chair of the ABU Copyright Committee for a term of two years. The Legal Manager Mr Nawaz Dookhee proposed a change in the name of the Committee. Participating members have unanimously agreed to change the name of the Committee into that of Intellectual Property and Legal Committee after having discussed at length the issue. This suggestion will be submitted next month to the Planning and Strategy Group and later to the Administrative Council for approval.

Participating organisations were: PBC-Pakistan, SLRC-Sri Lanka, MTV-Sri Lanka, Thai PBS-Thailand, NHK-Japan, IRIB-Iran, TVTM-Turkmenistan, BTV-Bangladesh, TDM-Macau, CCTV-China, PSM-Maldives, NBT-Thailand, SAPPRFT-China, RTM-Malaysia, RRI-Indonesia, Prasar Bharati-India, Irdeto-Singapore, FIT-China, NBA-China and MCMC-Malaysia.

There is intense interest from members to host the next year’s event. Iran is likely to be the favourite.
