Krabi 2016 Action Plan for expanding the role of media in Disaster Risk Reduction

The 2nd Media Summit on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction ended in Krabi, Thailand with the adoption of Media Action Plan. The document was initiated by ABU and the host organisation, Thai PBS.

The broadcast media pledges to:

-serve the viewing and listening audiences, especially the most vulnerable-the poor, women and children , the elderly, the disabled through the dissemination of reliable and understandable information concerning climate change and DRR in the most appropriate format.

-assist individuals, communities and nations in the mitigation, preparation and response to natural disasters and with the relief and recovery efforts following a disaster.

– continue the Climate Change/DRR discussions with all stakeholders including governments,  UN agencies, NGOs and the private sector.

– will avail our technical expertise and capabilities to stakeholders, practitioners or the communities for the development, production and broadcasting of news stories, features and announcements.

Earlier, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the experience of Japan’s. NHK in dealing with disaster management, to hear examples of Climate change and DRR inclusion practices and how new technologies can help in disseminating critical information before, during and after natural disasters.

The ABU TV Awards on Climate Change and DRR were presented at a special ceremony.
