First-ever ABU Radio Drama Workshop flags off in Colombo

The first-ever Radio Drama Workshop of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) will kick off in Colombo on 26 July 2016. Radio drama, a potent content driver, provides immersive experience to audiences and attracts their attention. Currently, this radio art-form has generally been forgotten, as drama is mostly overlooked by radio broadcasters, particularly the commercial ones.

Having noticed that the industry has lost the expertise on radio drama production, ABU worked on reviving and developing this radio format. This hands-on workshop in Colombo will reignite interest in radio drama, addressing it to old and new markets, and new platforms.

Participants will explore key ideas in the creative journey of radio drama, sharing practical strategies and options, SWOT analysis, support and mentoring. The three day event will see interaction with key media practitioners and students.

Hosted by Sri Lankan broadcaster MBC networks of Capital Maharaja, the workshop will be conducted by a top level expert trainer Akim Mogaji (formerly of BBC) and Atila Vizauer, Theatre Director, Radio Romania.

This workshop is the precursor to the inaugural ABU Radio Drama Festival taking place in 2017.
