India – 32 DTH Educational Channels to air by September

The Government of India has approved the introduction of 32 Direct-To-Home (DTH) television channels to be aired by Doordarshan throughout the country. The project known as ‘Swayam Prabha’, aims at providing high-quality educational content to students, teachers and other citizens. It is expected to be launched by September this year.

The programmes to be broadcast will be primarily in English. Eventually, the programmes will be available in other local languages as well. Students will be able to get access to the content at their own convenient time, with 4 hours of novel content daily which are screened 6 times a day.

Among the courses to be proffered are classes in arts, science, commerce, performing arts, social sciences, humanities subjects, engineering, technology, law, medicine and agriculture. Programmes on offer will comprise of all levels of education including school education, undergraduate, postgraduate, engineering, out-of-school children, vocational courses and teacher training. The channel will be available over Doordarshan’s free DTH service FreeDish.
