Digital Radio – A stronger WorldDAB presence in the Asia-Pacific region

WorldDAB is once more the Principal Sponsor of ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium this year. Talking about the DAB+ expansion in the Asia-Pacific and other regions across the globle, Ms Bernie O’Neill, Project Director of WorldDAB said that 2017 is a landmark year for the organisation.

She informed the symposium that 39 countries are currently having DAB services on air, reaching more that 400 million people. The number of receivers sold as at date is about 55 million. In Asia-Pacific, Australia is leading the digital radio services with 3.6 million DAB+ listeners. Trials have reached a satisfactory level in countries like Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar.

In Europe, Switzerland and Italy will soon follow Norway in the switching off of their FM network.  Progress is also noted in France, Germany, UK and Denmark.  DAB+ is also on the good track in the Middle East – Tunisia and Algeria as well as in South Africa.

Tomorrow morning, the industry keynote address will be delivered by Ms Joan Warner, Vice President and Asia-Pacific Chair, WorldDAB and CEO of Commercial Radio Australia.
