Nepal to switch off analogue signal in five major cities

In Nepal Analogue television is living its last days, since it will soon be replaced with digital TV in 5 the major cities of the country, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Biratnagar and Birgunj.

The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) declared that the licences will not be renewed for those who haven’t started the digitalisation process.

Mahendra Man Gurung, Secretary at the MIC declared:  “We have formed a committee comprising of all the stakeholders including cable operators, and that will play a proactive role in implementing the decision. We will gradually implement the decision.”

The government declared that the transition should be done around April 2018. Since all operators are not able to switch to the digital network the Federation of Cable TV Association of Nepal has created the digitalisation drive a process through which small operators will be able to operate the transition.

It has been estimated that the country will need around 1 million set-top boxes (STB) in order to perform this digitalisation. (Dataxis)
