54th ABU General Assembly gathers the elite of broadcasting in Chengdu, China

Final preparations are in a full swing for the biggest gathering of broadcasters in the Asia – Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and the hosts, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China and the Sichuan Radio and Television, are making final preparations to stage the 54th ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings in Chengdu, China, from 30 October to 4 November 2017.

More than 600 delegates have already registered for the most important ABU meeting which this year focuses on “The Media in Times of Uncertainty”.

The General Assembly, to be held on 3rd and 4th November, is the supreme governing body of the ABU. This annual meeting provides a unique opportunity to members to meet and exchange ideas and experiences and for the Union to review its work and plan for the future.

The GA also enables members to discuss prominent issues facing the broadcasters. This year the theme of the Super Panel Forum 1 and 2 are “Content and Services for Diverse Audiences and National Development: Go Local” and “Social Media vs Traditional Media: Reporting in the Age of Uncertainty”. On the same day in the afternoon the Professional Discussion will focus on Winning Strategies: Change Management and Leadership for the Future.”

Prior to the two-day General Assembly, the Sports Group Conference, Technical Committee Meeting, Radio Working Party, Programme Committee Meeting, Women With the Wave forum and Quality Management workshop will discuss challenges and opportunities for broadcasters in sports rights and coverage, new technologies, content for multi-platforms, radio in the digital age, women empowerment in and through the media and quality management.

A special feature of this year’s Associated Meetings is the forum on Media Cooperation along One Belt-One Road, the China initiative of building partnerships and prosperity in the countries on the ancient Silk Road.

The 54th ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings are held in conjunction with the 14th Sichuan TV Festival which is a unique opportunity for the ABU members to engage and partner with Chinese media organisations.
