Engineering Fundamentals Workshop Held in Kuala Lumpur


Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) holds 5th Regional Workshop on Engineering Fundamentals for Broadcasters during 03-07 December 2018 at IPPTAR Technology Building in Kuala Lumpur.

The workshop provided basic engineering fundamentals to broadcast engineers and technicians who are at the beginning of their careers. Providing the underlying theory of how audio and video systems have developed and sharing knowledge and functioning of the basic building blocks of TV and Radio engineering. It also covered the fundamentals of moving from analogue to digital signals including basics of IT and the networked environment, MPEG Video Compression Standards and its applications. It also introduced the participants to learn about the current trends and evolving media technologies.

The five-day workshop was addressed by experienced experts from broadcasters and the media industry. The workshop also included an observation visit to Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) Facility.

The regional training event covered topics such as: 

  • Basics of Audio and Video 
  • Radio and TV transmission concepts, techniques and technologies
  • Concepts of analogue to digital signal conversion
  • Signal processing in the media value chain
  • Multiplatform delivery and Quality of Experience 
  • Converged media-IT-broadcast environment and Cloud Computing Basics
  • Evolving media and delivery platforms

The workshop was attended by 36 participants from 14 different countries in the Asia Pacific Region representing ABU and AIBD members from West Asia, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific Islands including Africa in the workshop.
