At the ABU annual meetings in Manila in 2000, the General Assembly accepted the Technical Committee recommendation to set up two ABU Engineering Awards to be instituted in 2003. They were the ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award and the ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award. In 2012, the ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award was instituted.  It was sponsored by KOBA. In 2013, the ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award was introduced.  It was sponsored by SONY in 2013 and 2014.

ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award | For outstanding contributions in broadcasting engineering and related disciplines.

ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award | For outstanding contributions in developing, implementing and/or promoting green technology in the broadcasting industry.

ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award | For outstanding engineering contributions made by an individual to the broadcasting industry.

ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award | For contributions of an outstanding nature in broadcast engineering made by an individual in a developing broadcasting organisation.

Mr Lee played a major role in developing new technology for UHDTV as a member of Korea’s next generation broadcasting technology committee.

From 2000 until 2012 Mr Yeo played a major part in Mediacorp’s technological development, including HDTV production, a file-based news production system and 3DTV production.

NHK | For setting an environmental protection as a basic philosophy and for its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

DVB | in recognition of DVB-T2 as a revolutionary technology that, compared to other terrestrial distribution technologies, has the highest potential to reduce transmission related greenhouse emissions.

At the time when MTV’s facilities had been badly damaged by fire, Mr Mohotty helped restore the MCR and studios, and was responsible for introducing innovative technologies across the whole spectrum of broadcast engineering.

Mr Nishizawa received the first ABU Engineering Excellence Award for his work that led to the development of an international standard on HDTV production and eventually to the establishment of digital satellite broadcasting in Japan.

The inaugural ABU Engineering Industry Award was conferred on Mr Bimal Kumar De for his contribution towards the introduction of digital television broadcasting in India.
