With elections in the world’s three biggest democracies in 2024, including Indonesia and India, the election reporting workshop focuses on coverage issues and reporting tips. It will include planning considerations, social media tools for identifying the issues that matter most to voters, fact checking and verification options, journalist ethics and guidelines for responding to breaking news. The workshop will include fact sheets and practical exercises, including a checklist for producing live interviews.
The digital news workshop will feature a special session on data journalism and data visualization, plus case studies and exercises on maximising engagement and reaching new audiences on social media.
0900-1200 – Election reporting workshop
The role of the media in reporting elections, identifying the issues that matter most to voters, fact-checking and verification, journalist ethics and trust, journalist safety and a deep dive into the elections in Indonesia and India, with 360info editor Shahirah Hamid. Shahirah began her career as a broadcast journalist at Malaysia’s free-to-air channel, ntv7. She was a founding team member and writer for #edGY and a broadcast journalist for The Edge TV. Prior to 360info, Shahirah was the communication and content program officer for a non-profit media advocacy outfit, Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ).

1300-1630 – Digital News & News for Social Media workshop
1300-1500 – Data journalism and data visualisation, with Lee Long Hui. Long Hui was a journalist with Malaysiakini for 11 years. He is one of the founding members of the Kini News Lab. Currently, he is a front-end developer with Malaysiakini. He enjoys the work of combining the skills and knowledge of journalism and computer science for better storytelling.
1500-1515 – Break
1515-1525 – Thai PBS case study, with senior news producer Jeerapa Boonyatus. Jeerapa explains Thai PBS World’s strategic approach to distributing content across various social media platforms to maximize viewership and engagement.
1525-1625 – Optimizing news on social media, with TRT’s Ali Burak Biber.
1625-1630 – Wrap and end of meeting
