In the new media environment, broadcasters are facing fierce competition from OTT to an individual with a cell phone who can disseminate information, image and opinions. Television and radio are even described as an old, traditional, or a legacy media. However, we remain relevant in the digital world with technical innovation, editorial effort, and a rich legacy. The legacy of “trust” which we have been winning from the people through our daily effort. The question now is how we can strengthen this trust.

In Japan, public broadcaster NHK and commercial broadcaster association JBA and its members teamed up in 2003 to create BPO, Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization. BPO is an independent organization which deals with issues concerning broadcasting content. BPO aims to improve the quality of broadcasting and high ethical standard to promote the independence and autonomy of broadcast. For the past twenty years BPO have made fair judgement and advice from the third-party viewpoint succeeding to become as a social system that people can rely on which uplifted Japanese broadcast as a whole.

In November, at the 2021 ABU-GA, BPO was introduced briefly. This webinar is a follow up to give more details about the organization with case studies for better understanding.
