Course: Investigative Journalism Within the Legal Framework

2-part legal seminar held in January and February 2021

Media is one of the most powerful tools to disseminate information and shape opinion across the world, expanding beyond print media, television, radio to the digital platforms which have global reach.

The seminars proposed to delve into the nuances of the new challenges and interplay between media law and investigative journalism as they impact businesses and the importance of being cognisant of this field. It encompassed defamation (libel/slander), its defences (one of which is the publication of information that is done in public interest), contempt of court, hate speech, information technology, broadcasting, privacy and human rights/fundamental rights. It also addressed the manner in which competing interests between media reportage and freedoms can be met in a legally astute manner.

The seminars were delivered by Dr. Suranga Jayalath, the Chairperson, ABU IPLC plus Legal & Group Director, The Capital Maharaja Organization Limited, Sri Lanka.
