In order to appreciate and understand subscriber growth in subscriber video-on-demand (SVoD) / subscription streaming services, you need to have an understanding about IP Franchise Management.

Susie Hammill, a leading expert in all areas of SVoD, will simplify the complexities of the Super 8, and how their business models and figures are influencing peoples viewing habits, and the impact on the broadcast entertainment industry as a whole.

Session 1 Tuesday 7 February
IP Franchise Management
Intellectual Property, Franchise Management is driving the SVoD businesses – creative assets turned into revenue.

Creative assets range from, but not limited to, characters in a story, an entire drama series, digi gaming series…

When CBS Viacom released their quarterly earnings in the first half of 2022, Paramount+ delivered great numbers – 56 million subscribers!! That doesn’t include Showtime, but their management of their creative assets, in particular the Yellowstone franchise has been the key growth driver for that success. Halo, which is a digi gaming asset will be renewed for Series 2 and they are now looking to put all their films on Paramount+ first. They have also started looking at Sonic the Hedgehog as a live action series.

Session 2 Wednesday 8 February
The Super 8

Netflix
Disney+
Amazon Prime
HBOMax
AppleTV+
Paramount+
Discovery+
AMC Networks

Part 1: The Super 8 by the numbers – looking at the subscriber numbers of the Super 8, and what does that subscriber revenue mean?
How are these figures exactly factored into balance sheets and P&L (profit & loss). Foxtel Australia’s 2022 reporting results showed subscriber numbers up 66% for Binge and Kayo, but revenue slightly down. In the case of Foxtel it would be licensing costs, but for the others, increased production costs or other factors.

Part 2: Super 8 – who are they and what genres are providing the most audience appeal and why?
One example that will be looked at is Euphoria on HBO Max (US). In 2022 it was one of the highest ranked series – largely led by the popularity of actress and singer, Zendaya (Euphoria is aimed at Gen Z)
