Course: Women Behind the Camera

Women Behind the Camera Lens is aimed at women who are currently working in the broadcast medium and who are interested in becoming a cinematographer, or for those who are camerawomen and want to further develop their techniques. It is also suitable for those who would like to have an understanding of what a cinematographer is looking for when filming.

The session will explore the main set of skills for successful camera work, creative camera techniques, language of the camera, how to produce thought provoking content, innovative & cost-effective tips for lighting, characterisation, emotions, etc. You will also hear insights from the perspectives of a female DOP.

AFTRS Head of Cinematography, Kim Batterham ACS will lead the discussions with guest speaker, Tania Lambert ACS, freelance cinematographer both in Australia and overseas with an extensive experience in film, drama, TVCs, music videos, documentary & promos.

Tania Lambert ACS

Tania Lambert ACS, is an award-winning Australian cinematographer with a keen eye for composition and lighting plus a desire to tell stories which move people in every way.

Tania is currently working as a freelance cinematographer both in Australia and overseas and has extensive experience in film, drama, TVCs, music videos, documentary & promos. Tania was the DOP for the critically claimed 2022 Australian Film, Here Out West, an anthology film directed by five female directors including fellow Australians, Ana Kokkinos and Leah Purcell. Tania has also been 2nd Unit on drama series such as OTT streaming-service Stan’s The Gloaming, and Wakefield for ABC TV (Aust).  

Other highlights include the coming-of-age TV drama/horror series, Patricia Moore; the 2017 teen feature film Rip Tide with Debby Ryan; Trent O’Donnell’s Australian TV series The Moodys; Nakkiah Lui’s TV series Kiki and Kitty; as well as multi award winning web series High Life starring Odessa Young. 

Tania has won numerous Australian Cinematographer Society awards for her music videos, commercials and dramas including a Gold Award for Spirit in ‘Specialised & Experimental’, a Silver Award in ‘Drama’ for Patricia Moore, a Silver Award in ‘Music Video’ with her work on The Ruben’s ‘Lay It Down’ featuring actor Abbie Cornish, and a Silver in 2nd Unit Cinematography on The Gloaming.  Her award-winning work garnered Tania the honour of receiving her ACS accreditation in 2018.

Kim Batterham ACS

Kim Batterham ACS has been a director of photography for over 25 years. Kim has shot features, mini-series, TV series, independent dramas, and documentary.

He has been recognised for the high standard of his work by his many awards, which include Australian Cinematographer of the Year 2000 and an AFI (Australian Film Institute) for Best Cinematography in 2001.

Kim has achieved recognition of his portrait work and was hung by the Australian National Portrait Gallery (Photographic) in 2009.
