New case studies from BPO Japan

Japanese BPO, Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization, was established by the public broadcaster NHK and commercial broadcaster association JBA and its members twenty years ago. BPO is an independent organization concerning broadcast content dealing issues from the third-party’s viewpoint. When an issue is aroused by broadcasting content, BPO will examine and evaluate those cases based on the broadcast standard that each broadcasters have, coming up with an opinion and advice. BPO endeavor to promote independence and autonomy of broadcast by improving the quality and ethical standard. With its twenty years of history, through its fair judgements and advice BPO have achieved respect and regarded as a social system that people can rely on.

In this webinar, BPO will share the recent decisions it has issued regarding cases from documentary production and the youth protection. To remain competitive in the severe multi-media environment, the key for broadcaster is the trust that we have achieved through many years. But what’s more vital is to continue building on to such legacy. This webinar shall give precious opportunity and examples for improving the ethical standard of yours.

Jun Ogawa, Secretariat, International Affairs Officer, BPO Japan (Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization)

In 1979 Jun started his career as a news reporter by joining TBS and covered many major international news events. Jun later became the TBS Bureau Chief for Johannesburg, and Washington DC bureaux. From 2002 Jun was TBS’s Director for International Affairs, and for many years, regularly participated in ABU activities. Before retirement from TBS in 2017, he was dispatched to BPO, the independent broadcasting watch dog, as a secretariat. In 2021, with his rich international experiences, Jun became the first International Affairs Officer for BPO.
