29th ABU Intellectual Property & Legal Committee (Ex-Copyright Committee)

2023-05-29 to 2023-05-30
March 5, 2024

The 29th ABU Intellectual Property & Legal Committee (Ex-Copyright Committee) will be held on May 29th  and May 30th 2023 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The theme for this year’s IPLC is New Developments in IP & Media Law and the Impact on Broadcasters.

The IPLC is the ABU Legal Division’s flagship committee and forum which deals with contemporary legal and copyright issues related to broadcasting. This upcoming IPLC will be enriching, as it will throw light on legal issues related to revisions in 1961 Rome Convention to confront & deal with Signal Piracy in the Broadcast Industry.

The first day of the IPLC (29th May) is a closed meeting session meant only for ABU’s Full Members, Additional Full Members and Associate Members while the second day (30th May) is the Forum where presentations on contemporary legal topics are made by eminent lawyers, legal professionals and other experts on matters related to broadcasting.

On the second day (30th May – Forum), we will have 2nd EDITION OF IPLC AWARD (Building Respect for IP) – the next step!.

Your organization may select anything related to IP, media, broadcasting, and related legal fields that your organization introduced in the past 12-15 months.  You may also send your nominations for upcoming projects which are in pipeline but have not yet been implemented or are ongoing.

The ambit of the IPLC Awards is quite broad and nominations from wide areas of law are encouraged (till the time it is connected to media and broadcasting). Your nomination will not be disqualified solely because it is not directly linked to IP. If you can demonstrate even a tiny connection with IP or content, that should be fine.

In order to participate in the IPLC Awards, please send your nominations in the form of:

  • 7 minutes power point presentation outlining your initiative or project;
  • A written brief of upto 2000 words.

The Chairperson of IPLC in consultation with the ABU Secretariat will appoint an independent and impartial panel of judges. These judges will be eminent experts in the field of media and broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region. Neither the ABU Secretariat nor ABU IPLC Chairperson Mr. Suranga Jayalath would have any role to play in shortlisting and in selecting the winner and the runner-up.

You may send the completed form to Ms. Ruchi Malhotra at ruchi@abu.org.my and cc: seemantani@abu.org.my before 30th March 2023. Please send your 7 minutes power point presentation or the 2000 word written brief to Ms. Ruchi Malhotra at ruchi@abu.org.my by 15th April 2023.

P.S. You may submit your nomination even if you don’t plan to attend the IPLC in Colombo. If selected, you would still be entitled to the trophy and the memento (which the ABU Secretariat will mail to the relevant member).
